Mind and Body Detox
Detoxification is important to both our physical body and our emotional health. Our lives are so very busy now, and it so easy to overlook the importance of taking a longer-term view of our health. Our lives have also become more and more stressful as we endeavour to work longer hours to make ends meet, party more, eat poorly and sleep less. We have become all to dependant on junk food and “quick fixes”. All this results in poor performance, fatigue, depression, weight gain, and the poor condition of our hair, skin and nails. Over the years this can unfortunately lead to more serious health implications if not dealt with now.
Critical to any detox programme is exercise. Exercise stimulates the lymphatic system and improves circulation. Increased circulation results in oxygenation of our cells and the removal of waste materials. Exercise also releases endorphins which help to elevate mood and help you cope with stress.
Food for the soul is an important component in the detoxification process. The body and mind are intrinsically linked, so anger, negative thoughts and stress can play havoc with your immune system and reduce the body’s ability to eliminate toxins thereby making you more susceptible to infection and disease. By practicing relaxation techniques such as visualisation and meditation for just 15 minutes a day, you will notice a significant improvement in your resistance to stress as well as stress-related illnesses.
Eating nutritious whole foods (fruits, vegetable and pulses) are highly beneficial to the detoxification process. The vitamin and minerals they contain cleanse, nourish and stimulate the whole body. Some of the most beneficial foods are garlic, onions, beetroot, spinach, cruciferous vegetables, carrots, pulses, sprouts, fruits, herbs, nuts and seeds.
Water and herbal teas have a cleansing effect on the entire system. They aid in the detoxification process by easing nausea, constipation and indigestion whist at the same time alleviate respiratory problems, headaches and skin conditions.
